John Holguin - Violin

John Holguin grew up in El Paso, TX and attended the University of Texas at El Paso. He received a B.M. in Music Education, cum laude, in 2005.

During his time at the University of Texas at El Paso, John was a member of the El Paso Symphony Orchestra. He also occasionally performed with the Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra in New Mexico and the Symphony Orchestra in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

John has accompanied various artists, such as Yvonne Elliman, Barry Dennen and Chuck Wagner. From 2006-2007, John taught middle school orchestra in the El Paso Independent School District.

In addition to being a classically trained violist, John began performing with Mariachi Los Pasajeros of El Paso in 2001 and helped form and co-direct Mariachi Boston of Massachusetts. In May 2008, Mariachi Boston performed at the Massachusetts State House where they garnered attention for Hispanic Writers Week and serenaded Governor Duval Patrick.

John recently completed his M.M. degree from Boston University, where he also worked as a graduate assistant and orchestra manager. Performing around the New England area gave John the chance to work closely with composers from the Berkley School of Music, New England Conservatory of Music, Longy School of Music and Boston University.

While collaborating with these composers, John accumulated more than 150 hours of recording studio time, and in 2007, performed two pieces by new composer Juliet Case, which premiered in New York City. In 2008, John also performed in the premier concert with the Quincy Bay Chamber Players located in Quincy, MA.

In 2009, John returned to Texas and now calls Austin home. He's a private music instructor and continues to perform both mariachi and classical music throughout the Austin area.
